Problematic books and why we read them

Problematic books and why we read them

Let’s talk about problematic books What is a problematic book? I think that’s one of the easiest questions we are able to answer in the book community. They’re books that have something problematic about them. Well, duh Ashley, you’re telling me. But it’s something more than that too. It’s a callus disregard for something triggering, something sexist, or racist. It’s could be bad representations of the LGBT community. There’s too many to reasonably list, but you get the idea. I’ve read books that definitely fit into one or more of these things at one time. Sometimes it has a lot […]

What exactly is our place in the book community?

What exactly is our place in the book community?

We are bloggers and reviewers and more I believe that if you’re a reader you’re part of the book community. It doesn’t matter if all you do is read and tell a friend about something crazy that happened in a book or you’re one of the most popular and well-known bloggers in the world. We all have a place. I question what is that place a lot though. Not just for myself but for all of us at a whole. Do we really get as much of a say in certain areas, ie problematic books/themes/etc, or if we have the […]

When I stopped blogging I forgot enjoyment

When I stopped blogging I forgot enjoyment

I Knew I Had To Stop When I knew my place in the book world wasn’t working for me anymore I just ignored it. One might ask why but that’s not a truly easy question to answer. I didn’t want to believe that I could feel such apathy towards something that I felt saved so many parts of me. I didn’t want to believe that I felt like there was no place for me. I didn’t want to believe that I just lost enjoyment in reading. Such apathy I felt so indifferent to the book world. Part of that might […]

Hello There : Depression and Absence

Hello There : Depression and Absence

We can make this awkward I’m sure you remember back at the new year I said I was essentially retiring from the blogging world. True, I never said in so many words, but it was pretty much implied. I just was so tired with the politics of the book world and not feeling like I was doing anything to add to the positivity of the community. If I’m being honest, I’m not sure much has really changed in regards to the politics, and if anything, it seems very much worse. But as I live day after day I feel this […]

Goodbye 2016, Hello The Future

Goodbye 2016, Hello The Future

It’s been an amazing few years Guys, it’s time. I’m retiring. I had so much fun the last few years since I began blogging and getting into the book world, but there’s no place for me anymore. Not because I don’t feel welcome, but because I don’t have the heart for it. It’s not because of anything one thing or something that I’ve seen. But let’s be honest, the Twitter book world as of late has been horrendous. I love you all I have so much love and respect for the book community as a whole. You have gotten me […]

First Person vs Third Person Point of View

First Person vs Third Person Point of View

There’s a big debate over first person and third person point of view Don’t ask me why there’s such a debate over reading first person versus third person point of view because I don’t really know why. Yes, I understand preference but there are some people who just do not read one or the other. My personal preference is third but I still read my share of first. I want to take a look at both POVs, and maybe I all-time favorite second person, and talk about why there’s such a divide. What is first person point of view? I’m […]

What to do when you’re favorites aren’t anymore?

What to do when you’re favorites aren’t anymore?

It’s very easy to find an author or authors who just do it for you. They write amazing stories and have characters that no matter what they do, they’re your favorites. You go out and buy all their books, tell everyone about them; you make it your life’s work to make sure that author is known to the whole world. But what happens when that stops? There’s a few authors out there right now that I loved so much when I first started reading them. They had amazing books and stories that I still love, and I like them as […]

Why Do You Read? Romance Edition

Why Do You Read? Romance Edition

For as long as I can remember I have loved reading. Sure, there have been phases where I don’t pick up a book for months but I always come back around to reading. Why? Because there’s just something about words on a page that enthrall me. Authors have this amazing gift to tell stories, to teach, to share what they love. Sometimes I’m jealous of that gift but most of the time I don’t want that burden. I get asked from time to time what I like to read and why. I read from a wide variety of genres so […]

Why I Loathe The Use of Birth Control in Romance

Why I Loathe The Use of Birth Control in Romance

There’s something that’s been bothering me for quite some time when it comes to romance novels, and more specifically, New Adult romance. No, it’s not the romanticizing of abusive relationships, even though that’s a really big problem. And no, it’s not the “I’m at a certain age and all I want to do is lose my viriginity” trope. If you know me, you know that’s a big for me though. No, what’s really been bothering me lately is birth control. Birth Control? Why birth control you ask? Well, it’s simple. Birth control is there not just to help protect against […]

Ashley and Ethan’s Pride Month Round-Up

Ashley and Ethan’s Pride Month Round-Up

Ethan messaged me last night with this wonderful idea. Because June is Pride month he was telling me how I should have done something special on the blog highlighting some of my favorite LGBT novels. I loved the idea so much we decided to collaborate and feature some of our favorites! Ethan’s Round-Up As anyone who’s hung out over on my blog will tell you, it’s my goal in the book world to make an impact as a male reader. I review from a male’s POV, offering new insight to both authors and readers. Being a straight male blogger has […]

The LGBT Community and Me

The LGBT Community and Me

It’s no surprise to many that I love and adore LGBT fiction/romance. I love reading stories about people who I can relate to, people who are like friends that I have had or still have. Everyone deserves a happy ending no matter their sexuality/identity. I’ve never shied away from talking about my sexuality. Sure, I don’t necessarily put it out there at all times, but if asked or prompted for some reason or another, I’m truthful. In real life and online. I don’t see the point. If I can’t be who I am, if I can’t stand up for what […]

Let’s Get Serious . . . Mental Illness and Me

Let’s Get Serious . . . Mental Illness and Me

This is a post I’ve been thinking about writing for a long time now. I’ve only recently broached the subject with close blogger friends because I figured if they thought it might be worth doing, it probably is. I am Bipolar. Why would I want to share this with the world? Isn’t it bad enough that the vast majority of people who find out someone is Bipolar treats them like a second-class citizen? Why would I want to put this out there in the world? Because this community has helped me in more ways than meds ever have. I cannot […]
